Dry Rot
Dry Rot, otherwise known as Serpula Lacrymans normally starts in damp, but not saturated timbers over 20% moisture content, if the micro-climate is favorable. the fungus creates its own moisture to allow it to develop.
Hyphae (fine greyish fungal strands) grow from the spore to spread over and through wood to adjacent materials.
Collectively, these hyphae strands form a sheet of fungus known as mycelium. The mycelium will vary in colour from a dirty grey to pure white in damp conditions.
These strands can transport moisture from damp areas, allowing the spread of fungus to dry timbers in unventilated areas.
Later, sporophores or fruiting bodies will form, giving off millions of spores in the form of ‘red dust’.
Timber attacked by Dry Rot becomes brittle with cuboidal fractures and may be crumbled by hand.
Dry Rot is malignant and will spread, even through thick walls, in search of more timber to attack.
Unfortunately, where an outbreak occurs, the concealed infection is frequently well established before the first evidence of the attack is discovered.
